You will be learning towards the outcome “Control the speed of a double acting cylinder”. Whilst learning towards the outcome you will be required to achieve the following:

  • Know the application of supply air throttling.
  • Know the application of exhaust air throttling.
  • Know how to construct a circuit and set the flow control valve so that the piston will travel at the speed indicated by your Training Officer.

You will be learning towards the outcome “Construct and set a circuit with a time delay valve”. Whilst learning towards the outcome you will be required to achieve the following:

  • Know the components which make up a time delay valve.
  • Know what causes the time delay switching inside the time delay valve.
  • Construct a circuit and set the time delay valve to hold the piston in the extended position for 5 seconds before it starts to retract.

On completion of this module, the learner must be able to:

  • State the components which make up a time delay valve.
  • State what causes the time delay switching inside the time delay valve.
  • Construct a circuit and set the time delay valve to hold the piston in the extended position for 5 seconds ±1 second before it starts to retract.

Application

  1. The time delay valve is actuated by a pneumatic signal after a pre-set time delay has elapsed. It is returned to the normal position via return spring when the signal is terminated. The time delay is infinitely adjustable by means of a regulating screw.
  2. Time delay valve is used to delay the output signal.

You will be learning towards the outcome “Set pressure sequence valves”. Whilst learning towards the outcome you will be required to achieve the following:

  • Know the function of a pressure sequence valve.
  • Know the function of a pneumatic 4/2 way directional control valve with spring return.
  • Set the one-way flow control valve so that the piston of cylinder no 1 will take 9 seconds to extend.
  • Set the sequence valve so that the cylinder no 2 starts to move when cylinder no 1 is fully extended.

On completion of this module, the learner must be able to:

  • State the function of a pressure sequence valve.
  • State the function of a pneumatic 4/2 way directional control valve with spring return.
  • Set the one-way flow control valve so that the piston of cylinder no 1 will take 9 seconds (±1 second) to extend.
  • The pressure sequence valve must be correctly set that cylinder no 2 starts to move if cylinder 1 is fully extended.

  • Know the application of a 4/2 way double pilot valve.
  • Know how to design and construct a circuit.

On completion of this module, the learner must be able to:

  • State the application of a 4/2 way double pilot valve.
  • Design and construct a circuit so that a double acting cylinder piston rod will extend fully after operating a push button and, after extended to its maximum, automatically return to its original position.

Application

The shuttle valve requires at least one signal input (OR function) to produce an output and the dual pressure valve requires two signals (AND function) to produce an output. These are processing elements whereby two signals are processed internally and the resulting signal is output at port 2.

Application

In module PN-1, it was explained that the speed of a cylinder is dependent on the flow of air supplied to it. Therefore, if the amount of air that flows to a cylinder can be controlled, the speed of the cylinder can be controlled.

Application

  1. The service unit ensures that the air is conditioned so that it can be used for operating in a pneumatic system. All the contaminants in the air must be removed and the water must be trapped and drained. This is done by fitting a filter with a water separator.
  2. The air must be regulated to a safe constant pressure by fitting a pressure regulating valve.
  3. The air must be enriched by oil so that it can lubricate the component parts by means of a lubricator.
  4. The filter is normally combined with a pressure regulator and lubricator to form a compressed air service unit.

The service unit is always located on the supply side of the pneumatic installation.

Application

  1. Industrial plants use a power system of one type or another. Work may be done by means of a substance under pressure. The substance can be either a gas, e.g. compressed air, or a liquid, e.g. oil. A system that uses gas for transmitting force is called a “pneumatic” system.
  2. Pneumatic systems are often used in the industry e.g. in rock drills and mechanical loaders in the mining environment and in the control system of the dragline in the open pits.
